PRENATAL MASSAGE Can I have massage when I am pregnant?
Many women wonder if it is safe to receive a professional massage during pregnancy. If you are having a healthy pregnancy, massage should be part of your prenatal health program.
How can I benefit from prenatal massage?
Here a just a few of the ways you can benefit from massage during pregnancy.
-A chemical free way to relieve the normal aches and pains of pregnancy. -Ease sore muscles in the neck, back and hips -Ease pressure and pain to the sciatic nerve. -Release emotional tension. -Relieve stress from weight bearing joints. -Learn relaxation skills needed for delivery.
How will I lie on the massage table?
The mother- to- be may lie on her stomach the first trimester. In the second and third she will be comfortably positioned in the side lying posture using a unique system of prenatal bolsters developed specifically for pregnancy massage. The mother is also allowed to lie on her back using the bolsters to elevate her to a 45 degree angle.
What about lying on my stomach with extra cushioning?
Some experts in the field of prenatal massage do not recommend allowing the mother to lie on her stomach even when using the cushioning of soft pillows or bolsters. This can cause unnecessary strain to the uterine ligaments. To insure that our mothers and babies are comfortable, we only use the side lying position and elevated supine (back) position.
